I last saw New York as a child, from the top of the original World Trade Center. I came back in October 2026, more than thirty years later, and spent four days trying to discover what sets the city apart. I found it in what people do in public. They wash sidewalks, push strollers through crosswalks, sleep in the park, and give tours to strangers. Yokyo, Hanoi, San Francisco, and Los Angeles each have a public life, and New York is no different. The action is palpable. Most of the people here never saw me. They were busy living in plain view.
